Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Quick answers about our culture, programs, and how to get started.

Welcome & Club Culture

Is the Rideau Speedeaus an inclusive club?
Yes. Inclusivity is a core value of the Rideau Speedeaus. We welcome swimmers of all genders, sexual orientations, body types, backgrounds, ages, and abilities. Our goal is to create a space where people feel safe, respected, and supported — in and out of the water.
Is this a queer club? Do I need to be queer to join?
The Rideau Speedeaus is proudly queer-inclusive and has strong roots in the LGBTQ2S+ community. You do not need to be queer to join. What matters is that you support a respectful, inclusive environment where everyone belongs.
What if I’ve had negative or traumatic experiences with sports or swimming in the past?
You’re not alone. Many of our members come with complicated histories around sport, competition, or locker-room culture. This club is intentionally different: no yelling, no shaming, no pressure to perform. You set your own pace, take breaks when needed, and are always encouraged to advocate for yourself.
Is there space here for beginners, older swimmers, or people returning after a long break?
Absolutely. Many members start with little recent swimming experience or return after years (or decades) away. We offer multiple entry points so you can join at a level that feels right.
What’s the vibe like at practices — competitive or relaxed?
Structured but relaxed. Workouts are coached and purposeful, but the atmosphere is supportive and friendly. Some swimmers train for competition, others swim purely for fitness or enjoyment. Both are welcome.

Getting Started

I haven’t swum in years — where should I start?
Many people begin with our Learn to Swim program, which is designed specifically for adults building confidence and skills.
What’s the difference between Learn to Swim and regular practices?
Learn to Swim is a coached program focused on comfort, confidence, and technique in a supportive environment. It includes two class types: Beginner and Stroke Improvement. Regular practices are ongoing coached workouts for Seasonal Members who are comfortable swimming longer sets and managing their own pacing within a lane.
How do I know which program is right for me?
Prerequisites are listed for each program, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. If you have questions, please reach out to info@rideauspeedeaus.com and we’ll be happy to help.
Do I need to know all four strokes to join?
No. Many swimmers start knowing only one or two strokes and build from there.

Learn to Swim & Clinics

Who is the Learn to Swim program for?
Adults who want a supportive, coached environment to learn swimming skills, improve technique, or build confidence.
What are the prerequisites for Beginner vs Stroke Improvement?
Beginner swimmers should be comfortable floating and submerging their head. Stroke Improvement swimmers should be able to swim one continuous 25‑metre length.
Can I move from Learn to Swim into regular practices later?
Yes. Many members do exactly that, often with guidance from coaches.
What are swim clinics, and are they right for me?
Clinics are focused sessions on specific skills (such as technique, pacing, or turns). They’re a great complement to either Learn to Swim or regular practices.
Can non-members attend clinics?
Yes. Clinics are open to members and non‑members. Seasonal Members attend clinics at no additional cost.

Lanes, Speed & Ability Levels

How do lane assignments work?
Lanes are organized at an approximate pace. You choose where to start.
What if I choose the “wrong” lane?
That’s okay — simply move to another lane at any time.
Can I switch lanes during practice?
Yes. You never need to ask permission to switch lanes.
What if my speed changes from day to day?
That’s completely normal. Choose the lane that works best for you that day.

Practices & Expectations

What does a typical practice look like?
Practices generally include a warm‑up, a main set, and a cool‑down, with coaching support throughout.
Do I have to attend every practice?
When you register, you select specific practice days. We ask members to attend their registered days as consistently as possible to help manage pool capacity. If you need to miss a session, our flexibility policy allows you to make it up on another day, space permitting.
What if I’m anxious or overwhelmed during a practice?
You can pause, modify, or step out at any time. Coaches and teammates are there to support you, and you’re always encouraged to do what feels right for your body and mind.

Equipment & Logistics

What equipment do I need to get started?
A swimsuit and goggles are all you need. Swim caps are optional — wear one if you like, but they’re not required.
Where do people change and store their belongings?
At the pool’s designated change rooms and lockers.
Are lockers and changing areas gender-inclusive?
Change room layouts depend on the facility. Some locations (such as the YMCA) offer gender‑neutral change rooms, while others (such as uOttawa) do not. Regardless of the facility, we support members using the change room that feels safest and most comfortable for them.

Trying It Out

What if I want to try it first?
If you’d like to swim with the Speedeaus before committing to a full block, we offer an intro month and drop‑in practices. Registration is required for both options.
